Saphir Odoriko (E261 series) runs from Tokyo via Atami and Ito to Izukyu-Shimoda at the tip of the Izu Peninsula. Every seat is Green class or better and reserved.

Eight cars: Premium Green seats that swivel toward the window, private rooms for 4 or 6 on the sea side, a café car, and Green cars with skylights.

Heading south, the sea is on the left for most of the coastal stretch — the private rooms face it.

How to book from abroad

Book Green and Premium Green seats on JR East's English booking site (JR-EAST Train Reservation). Private rooms are sold only at JR ticket offices and reserved-seat machines.

Sales open at 10:00 JST, one month before the travel date.

    Check which days your train runs

    Two trains run daily; the others only on certain weekdays or weekends. Some weekend trains start from Shinjuku.

    Book seats online

    Car 1 and cars 5–8 can be booked online with Visa, Mastercard, JCB, AMEX or Diners (no prepaid cards).

  3. 3

    Board ticketless or with a paper ticket

    Link a Suica/IC card for ticketless boarding, or collect tickets at a JR station.

  4. 4

    Order café food on your phone

    The café runs on smartphone ordering — order a main dish and a café seat is held for you.

Make a stopover

Tokyo → Atami (3 hrs) → Izu

Hop off at Atami on the way down the Izu coast for a shrine, the seafront and a kinmedai ekiben.
