From Friday 20 to Sunday 22 November 2026 the Kyoto Railway Museum holds a special evening opening from 17:00 to 19:30 (last entry 19:00).
After dark, the locomotives and carriages in the outdoor promenade, Twilight Plaza and the fan-shaped steam roundhouse have their headlights and interior lights switched on. Visitors can step inside an Orone 24 sleeping car, and the turntable in front of the roundhouse turns at 18:20 and 18:40 (about 10 minutes each).
Only the outdoor areas and the roundhouse are open in the evening — the main building is closed, and the museum shop, restaurant and bento stand do not operate. Anyone already inside on a regular daytime ticket can stay on for the event.
For visitors
- The evening ticket is sold at the museum only — there are no advance tickets — and it is cheaper than a full-day ticket. Usual discounts cannot be combined with it.
- Eat before you go: no food is sold during the evening session.
- Photographers: after 17:00, tripods and monopods are allowed only in the roundhouse area and its connecting deck; stepladders and selfie sticks are not allowed.
- Umekoji-Kyotetsuhakubutsukan Station (JR Sagano Line) is one stop from Kyoto.
