Chugoku (Hiroshima)
How to ride the Hiroshima streetcar (Hiroden)
広島電鉄(広電)路面電車の乗り方
One flat ¥240 fare to the Atomic Bomb Dome or Miyajima-guchi, board at any door — and since July 2026, tap your IC card both when you get on and when you get off.
- Board at any door
- Exit at the front
- Pay when you get off
- IC cards OK
- Flat fare
Hiroshima's streetcars, run by Hiroshima Electric Railway (Hiroden), are the easiest way to reach the Atomic Bomb Dome, Peace Memorial Park and the ferry pier for Miyajima. Since August 2025 the trams start inside the new Hiroshima Station building, on the second floor at the same level as the JR gates.
Every ride costs a flat ¥240 for adults (¥120 for children 6–11) on the whole network, including the long Miyajima Line out to Hiroden-Miyajima-guchi.
乗り方の流れ
Step by step
01Check the route number and destination
Look at the front of the tram. From Hiroshima Station, route 2 (to Hiroden-Miyajima-guchi or Hiroden-Nishi-Hiroshima) and route 6 (to Eba) pass the Atomic Bomb Dome.
02Board at any door
You can get on through any door, whatever you pay with. Single cars have two doors, articulated trams four.
03IC card? Tap when you get on
Since 1 July 2026, IC cards (ICOCA, Suica and the other nationwide cards) are tapped on the reader both when boarding and again when getting off. Hold the card until the reader says ありがとうございました (thank you).
04Press the stop button
When your stop is announced, press a stop buzzer. Trams with a conductor on board have no buzzers.
05Get off and pay
Paying cash: leave by the door next to the driver or conductor (on articulated trams the rear-left door also works) and drop the exact fare in the fare box. The change machine is next to it. IC card: tap again; one adult paying the full fare may get off at any door.
Cards and passes
Accepted IC cards: Kitaca, PASMO, Suica, manaca, TOICA, ICOCA, Hayakaken, nimoca and SUGOCA, including phone versions such as Apple Pay. PiTaPa is not accepted, and cards cannot be topped up on board. If your balance is too low, nothing is deducted and you pay the whole fare another way — you cannot split it.
1 Day Streetcar Pass: ¥700 (child ¥350). 1 Day Streetcar and Ferry Pass: ¥1,000 (child ¥550), adding the Miyajima Matsudai ferry and the ¥100 Miyajima visitor tax. Both are paper scratch cards — scratch off only the date you use it; scratching two dates voids it. Buy them at Hiroden offices including Hiroshima Station, at major hotels, or (limited stock) from tram crews. Digital versions are sold on MOBIRY TRAVEL; show the live ticket screen, not a screenshot.
The Visit Hiroshima Tourist Pass (1 day ¥1,000, 2 days ¥1,500, 3 days ¥2,000) covers all trams, city buses and both Miyajima ferries, but not JR trains or the visitor tax.
Changing trams
Where no tram runs direct, you can change at designated stops (such as Hatchobori, Kamiya-cho, Tokaichi-machi and Hiroden-Nishi-Hiroshima) and pay a single fare. With an IC card, tap off and on both trams and board the second within 60 minutes. Paying cash, tell the crew as you get off, take a transfer ticket (電車乗換券) and put it in the fare box on the second tram the same day.
Good to know
- The JAPAN RAIL PASS is not valid on Hiroden streetcars. It does cover the JR ferry to Miyajima, which leaves next to JR Miyajimaguchi Station.
- Children's IC cards are not charged the child fare automatically — use the crew door and tell the crew before tapping off. The same goes for paying for several people with one card.
- The change machine does not take the new ¥500 coin; ask the crew.
- Last tram from Hiroshima Station to Miyajima-guchi on route 2: 22:31; last from Miyajima-guchi back to Hiroshima Station: 21:55.
