Tane Yaku Jetfoil runs the jetfoils Toppy and Rocket (230 seats each) from Kagoshima's Honko South Pier to Yakushima. Some boats go direct to Miyanoura in about 1 hour 50 minutes; others call at Nishinoomote on Tanegashima and take about 2 hours 30–50 minutes to Miyanoura or Anbo. Calls at Ibusuki stopped on 1 April 2026.

Yakushima has two ports, Miyanoura and Anbo, and the port can change with sea conditions — check before you sail, especially if someone is meeting you or you've booked a bus.

Step by step

  1. 01Book ahead

Bookings open at 9:00 on the same date two months before you travel, on the website, by phone or at the port offices. Book online to pay by credit card or at a convenience store. Overseas visitors can also book by email — see the operator's inbound contact sheet in the sources.

  2. 02Get to the high-speed boat terminal

From JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station, take bus route 26 to Kosokusen Terminal (about 20 minutes) or a taxi (about 15 minutes). From JR Kagoshima Station it's about 5 minutes by taxi. The terminal opens 5:30–20:00.

  3. 03Weigh your hand luggage

Weigh your bags at the terminal and take the receipt. You may bring up to 15 kg per person; over that costs ¥1,500 one way in cash. Suitcases should be no more than 115 cm in total of three sides.

  4. 04Check in and get your seat

Queue at the check-in entrance for your boat and show the weight receipt and your booking (for web bookings, the reservation and payment emails). Seats are all assigned at the counter, from 1 hour before departure. Check-in closes 20 minutes before departure.

  5. 05Keep your seat belt on

Seat belts must be worn whenever you're seated. There's no phone charging on board.

Cheaper fares

Round trips are discounted (¥25,900) if you buy the return when you first board, and are valid for 7 days. Web-only early-booking round trips cost ¥20,700 (Hayawari 14) or ¥18,500 (Hayawari 28; not for travel 26 December 2026 – 3 January 2027, no changes). A loop ticket Kagoshima – Tanegashima – Yakushima – Kagoshima costs ¥29,790. A larger Super Seat is ¥1,000 extra.

The slow, cheaper option: Ferry Yakushima 2

Orita Kisen's car ferry Ferry Yakushima 2 makes one round trip a day: Kagoshima 8:30 → Miyanoura 12:30, Miyanoura 13:30 → Kagoshima 17:40. Second class costs ¥7,000 (child ¥3,450), first class ¥9,500. Individual passengers don't need to book — tickets are sold on the day only, by cash or credit card; arrive 1 hour before departure. It doesn't sail on some days (in late 2026: 15 and 29 November, 6, 13 and 20 December), so check its calendar.

Good to know

  • Whether each jetfoil sails is decided 1 hour before departure. In marginal weather a boat may sail "conditionally" and turn back. If it's cancelled, tickets bought in advance are refunded in full.
  • Keep the return ticket you're given — a lost ticket has to be bought again.
  • Pets aren't allowed (assistance dogs excepted), and items over 200 cm long or 30 kg can't be carried.
  • Neither operator lists any rail pass as valid.
