Miyajima — Itsukushima Shrine and its torii gate standing in the sea — is a short ferry ride from Miyajimaguchi, about 28 minutes from Hiroshima on the JR San-yo Line. JR West's own ferry company runs boats from early morning to late evening, so you never need to book.
Departures from Miyajimaguchi between 9:10 and 16:10 run as the "Great Torii" boats: they take a route close to the torii at no extra charge and in the same 10 minutes. The route can change at high tide.
乗り方の流れ
Step by step
01Walk from JR Miyajimaguchi Station
Leave the JR ticket gates and follow the underpass to the Miyajimaguchi passenger terminal — about 5 minutes on foot.
02Buy a ticket — or just tap
Buy a ticket at the JR West Miyajima Ferry counter or ticket machine. With an IC card, go straight to the ferry gate and tap: ICOCA, Suica, PASMO, Kitaca, manaca, TOICA, PiTaPa, Hayakaken, nimoca and SUGOCA all work.
03JR Pass holders
The JAPAN RAIL PASS and JR-WEST rail passes are valid on this ferry. The ¥100 Miyajima Visitor Tax still has to be paid when you go to the island.
04Through the gate and on board
Board through the ticket gate. Between 9:10 and 16:10, boats from Miyajimaguchi pass close to the Great Torii — stand on the side facing the torii.
The Miyajima Visitor Tax
Since 1 October 2023, Hatsukaichi City charges ¥100 per person each time you visit Miyajima (or ¥500 for a whole year, paid in advance at city offices). The ferry companies collect it with the fare when you travel to the island. Preschool children are exempt.
The other ferry: Miyajima Matsudai Kisen
A second company, Miyajima Matsudai Kisen, runs the same 10-minute crossing (¥200, child ¥100) from a terminal 1 minute from the Hiroden tram's Miyajimaguchi stop — handy if you come from Hiroshima by tram. It takes cash, IC cards, contactless credit cards and MOBIRY DAYS. The JAPAN RAIL PASS isn't valid on it: JR covers only the JR West ferry.
Good to know
- Extra boats are added on busy days; check the operator's top page for today's status.
- Pets can travel on a lead or in a cage on the outside deck, not in the cabin.
- Bicycles are carried for ¥100 one way on top of your own fare.
