How to ride the Fuji Kyuko Line to Kawaguchiko and the Chureito Pagoda

富士急行線の乗り方

Suica works at every station, the JR Pass stops at Otsuki, and Fujikyu's own limited expresses add a ¥400 charge — plus what changed for QR tickets in November 2026.

The Fuji Kyuko Line climbs from JR Otsuki to Fujisan and Kawaguchiko at the foot of Mt. Fuji, passing Shimoyoshida for the Chureito Pagoda. The fare depends on distance: Otsuki–Kawaguchiko is ¥1,170 on a paper ticket or ¥1,161 by IC card.

Step by step

  1. 01IC cards work at every station

Suica, PASMO and the other nationwide IC cards can be used at the gates of every Fuji Kyuko station; at stations with a simple reader, tap it firmly. Coming from JR with Suica, just tap at the transfer gate at Otsuki.

  2. 02Paper ticket from JR? Buy on at Otsuki

If you arrive at Otsuki on a paper JR ticket without a Fujikyu ticket, go out through the gate first and buy one. Boarding at an unstaffed station without a ticket? The conductor sells tickets on board.

  3. 03Limited express charges

Fujikyu's own Fujisan View Express and Fujisan Express add a ¥400 limited express charge (Otsuki–Kawaguchiko). Fujisan View Express car 1 is a special car (+¥900); reserved seats in car 2 cost +¥200.

  4. 04Shimoyoshida for the pagoda

Get off at Shimoyoshida and follow the signs to the Chureito Pagoda — about a 30-minute walk.

Fuji Excursion and the JR Pass

The Fuji Excursion runs straight from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko (Shinjuku–Kawaguchiko ¥4,200 in total, all seats reserved). The JAPAN RAIL PASS covers only the JR part to Otsuki: Otsuki–Kawaguchiko is a separate fare and charge paid to Fuji Kyuko.

From 1 November 2026, JR East's Eki-net Q-Ticket (QR tickets) can't be used for the Fujikyu section and its QR code won't open the Otsuki transfer gate — use Suica or PASMO, or ask staff.

Good to know

  • With an IC card you can't break your journey on the Fuji Kyuko Line. Top-ups are only possible at nine stations during counter hours — load enough before you set off.
  • Short of balance at an unstaffed station? The fare is settled at a counter next time, and the card is blocked until then.
  • Shimoyoshida's counter is open only 9:10–17:50, and the station is very busy in cherry-blossom season.
